Our Commitment To A Safer, More Informed Digital Future
Binary Refinery helps organisations use AI to work smarter, faster, and more safely. But we are equally committed to reducing the very real harms that AI can amplify - especially for those most vulnerable to them.
This page outlines our commitment to safety, education, and social impact, and the practical steps we take to contribute to a more resilient New Zealand.
Why This Matters
AI unlocks extraordinary value.
It can also be used to mislead, manipulate, and harm - often with devastating real-world consequences.
We see particular rising risks for:
Young people - targeted by deepfakes, misinformation, bullying, and non-consensual synthetic imagery.
Seniors - targeted by increasingly convincing AI voice scams, impersonation, and financial exploitation.
These harms cannot be ignored.
Our Approach
1. Education for Vulnerable Communities
Binary Refinery offers free, plain-language seminars to help everyday New Zealanders stay safe in a world where images, audio, and video can be fabricated with ease.
We focus on two groups:
Schools & parents - AI safety, deepfake awareness, and supporting young people.
Seniors & caregivers - staying safe from AI-enabled scams and impersonation.
These sessions are practical, calm, and empowering - designed to build digital resilience, not fear.
2. Supporting Organisations Working to Reduce Digital Harm
We contribute financially to organisations that:
Combat online abuse and non-consensual imagery.
Protect children and young people from digital exploitation.
Support seniors vulnerable to financial and identity fraud.
Strengthen public understanding of misinformation and digital safety.
This includes both New Zealand and international organisations whose work has measurable impact.
3. Responsible Use of AI in Our Own Work
We apply rigorous standards to how we use and recommend AI:
No hype, no exaggeration, no fear-mongering.
Clear governance and risk controls.
Strong emphasis on privacy, data integrity, and transparency.
Vendor-independent advice grounded in real-world outcomes.
Our guiding principle is simple: AI should strengthen trust - not erode it.
